What is it with these new members bringing cool things into the guild? This time it’s Nymper, who on his first day here set us up with a Ventrilo server!
For those of you who don’t know, Ventrilo (or “Vent,” for short,) is a free download that allows you to do voice chatting while playing your favorite video games. It’s the servers that cost money, and that’s why Nymper’s generous contribution is so awesome.
For most people setting it up is pretty streightforward once you have the server address, port number, and password. We’ve got all of those in the Guild Info tab when you’re ready to set it up. I just have a few suggestions for when you do:
- No, you don’t need a working microphone. It’s nice to have, but without a mic you can still hear what the rest of us are saying.
- If you DO have a mic, enable the “push to talk” (PTT) setting. This will keep people from hearing conversations and other sounds that you do not want to be heard. I set “\” as my hotkey for that feature because it’s far enough out of the way from the other keys I’m always hitting, but you can set yours for anthing you like.
- While you don’t need a headset mic, a pair of headphones would be good. That’ll keep the sounds from your speakers from playing back to the rest of the people listening in. (I admit, this is where I’m most lazy.)
- There are people in the guild who can help you set things up if you’re stuck. Nymper, of course, but Flamebait and myself have both helped others configure their Vent settings before as well so feel free to ask for assistance if you need it.
